CHAPTER 25

The heavy aura Laris was exuding began to thicken even further, and John felt the god’s anger beginning to manifest. They were inside Laris’ temple, yet the wind picked up, swirling with enough force to lift the benches the priests were hiding behind. The benches smashed against the walls and pillars, causing splinters of wood to whip through the air.

Unmoved, John maintained his position in the air, his flames burning anything that got too close. Seeing Laris’ anger, John grinned, though his smile was mirthless. This was how he had assumed the gods would respond to his presence. Yet still, Laris didn’t attack. Instead, John felt more beings of great power arriving as the gods manifested in their temples across the city.

Laris glared at him, clearly waiting for his peers so they could deal with John. Five more deities descended. Though he was more than confident he could have stopped the gods from descending by simply destroying the statues they were attempting to possess, John thought it better to establish their relationship firmly, so he simply waited until the five different presences coalesced.

Once they had finished forming, he shot up into the air, burning a hole through the ceiling of Laris’ temple, the statue of the merchant deity following close behind. Across the city, five other statues, varying in size and material, launched themselves into the air, flying up into the sky, clearly visible to all of the citizens.

Having just suffered a bandit attack that had actually managed to breach the city walls, and then having been wrenched from the jaws of death by a mysterious blue flame, the citizens had already been on an emotional roller coaster. Now, as gods rose up from their temples, surrounding a burning man made from blue-and-crimson flame, the city fell silent.

Even if they did want to fight back against whatever fate had in store for them, what were the citizens to do? The beings above them possessed power beyond their comprehension, and many of the citizens simply knelt down, too terrified to even look up. John, who was connected with a few hundred of the people in the city below, could feel their emotions surging. First surprise, and then fear, mixed with tiny seeds of hope and anticipation. Marveling at how accurate Rosh’s prediction of the events taking place had been, John knew it was his job to give the new believers a show, helping to cement their belief in the power of the eternal flame. One had only to look at him to understand who he represented, and as the gods stared at him, John couldn’t help but laugh.

In addition to Laris, the merchant god, there were five others. Genelit, the god of farming and of growth, was a brawny-looking man, carrying a hoe over one shoulder. Paracis appeared to be a dwarf, the god of crafting and forges. To his left was a matronly looking woman with a sharp gaze, Abon, the god of the hearth. The next god was
